Grapevine – UAF news and information
Class has no instructor listed
I am enrolled in a class that has no instructor listed. I assume this is because no one has been hired to teach it? What happens if an instructor cannot be found by the start of classes? The class is full, so I’m guessing someone will get figured out, but I’m a bit worried as […]

President’s video messages comment
Hello, This is indirectly related to UAF  – I’ve watched all of President Johnsen’s video comments and I would like to make a suggestion. Although I understand the president’s desire to keep people informed, his last video was very hurtful. President Johnsen is speaking to a population who has no idea if they’re going to […]

Parking decals follow-up
Follow-up question to parking decals because there seems to be some confusion in our office. I just want to verify that if we do get laid off that we will get a refund on parking decal because last year it said if you use payroll deduction to pay for your decal and you leave the […]

Teach-out policy
Does the Teach-Out policy apply to all students, including entering first-year and transfer students starting at UAF this fall or is it restricted to seniors?

The illusion of the PR potential of UAF athletics
I would like to write a rebuttal to the chancellor’s Cornerstone post about athletics at UAF. I grew up here, have received 3 degrees from UAF, and I have not been to a UAF sporting event since I was 14. My best friend throughout high school was a jock who played multiple sports who, as […]

Just got the notice about getting a parking decal for the upcoming academic year. If we purchase an annual parking pass but are terminated/laid off, are we eligible for a partial refund?

What are the trees along Yukon Drive with the black berries?
Follow-up question one: Will I die if I eat them? Follow-up question two: Will I live to regret it if I eat them?

Freshman dorm policy
The first-time freshmen dorm policy is intrinsically biased against Alaska Native students, since many stay with uncles, aunts and other family members, not parents or guardians as required for an exception. Culturally we say we want diversity, but we continue to not respect or understand other cultures. Can the exemption policy please be amended to […]

Elimination of duplication across UAA, UAF, UAS
There are dozens of academic programs that are duplicated either in Fairbanks, Anchorage or Juneau. This has produced a perception of the UA system being able to absorb cuts to certain legislators. With cuts to programs on the horizon, why not maintain the best programs, and eliminate these duplicated programs?

Exigency and accreditation
Question 1: Will exigent circumstances cause loss of accreditation? Question 2: Now that we know that the legislators were not successful with the veto override, and BOR is going to most likely file financial exigency, what guarantee can the University administrators give the students and employees that we will not lose accreditation by filing the […]

Close campus for summer to save money
With all the talk of drastic budget cuts, layoffs, furloughs, etc. – what would the savings be if the campus was closed entirely for at least two months during the summer? Being closed only two or 2 1/2 months would allow time after commencement for departments to finish their work and then open again a […]

Unemployement and retirement specialsts
I appreciate the open talking session with a councilor being held today. I would like to suggest that something similar is done with an unemployment specialist (like how to file for unemployment) and with retirement companies to explain different options with our funds.

Dental coverage
I noticed that when the new Blue Cross card came in the mail recently, under the “dental” coverage, the plan went from “standard” to “choice”.  By any chance, does that mean that our annual benefit is more than $2,000 for FY20? Thanks

Travel reimbursement
If the university declares financial exigency, will any outstanding travel expense reports still be paid back? My colleagues and I have been waiting for months on some non-Concur ERs from the last fiscal year that still haven’t been repaid. We’re very concerned about whether we’ll ever see our money again.

Will students in eliminated programs be able to graduate?
If the university decides to claim financial exigency and eliminates programs, will students in those programs be able to graduate? If students are on track to graduate in the fall or even in the spring, is there any assurance that they will still be able to?

Graduate assistantships
Graduate students who haven’t already signed their fall contracts are asking whether the hiring freeze applies to them and whether they are going to have jobs in the fall.  Teaching assistantships are funded from their departments allotment from the Chancellor, so it stands to reason that the likely response for them is “don’t count on […]

IDEA Task Force and Strategic Planning Committee reports?
I’ve been waiting months for the recommendations from the IDEA Task Force. Shouldn’t that group have finished their work by now? And when will the final reports from the strategic planning committees be available? According to the strategic plan website, the groups should have finished by the end of the spring semester.

Furlough details sought
The President has mentioned that furloughs will be given, however, hasn’t stated the amount of time of the furlough. Will the furloughs be for a pay period, multiple pay periods, off until further notice? If all staff is at least getting a furlough, the amount of time of the furlough.

Furlough – how does that affect insurance?
The suggestion of furloughs has come up several times recently from the Chancellor. What does a furlough look like? How will that affect health insurance for employees and is there a time frame that the Chancellor is considering? I know everything is uncertain, but it would be useful planning information. Thanks

Faculty views of staff
Hello Chancellor White, I have heard from several coworkers regarding faculty who have voiced some rather negative views of staff contribution at UAF. This is gravely concerning since these members are part of Faculty Senate Administrative Committee. I am deeply saddened that Faculty Senate leadership feel this way. Regardless of the topic at hand, they […]

Are the results of the end of semester student course evaluation surveys available to the general public?  If they are not currently available to the public, would the results of the evaluations be available if requested under a Freedom of Information Act request?

Hockey rink and scholarships
$20 million dollars for a hockey rink is the equivalent of 2400 full tuition scholarships or 4800 1/2 tuition scholarships. What will increase enrollment and diversity quicker? Scholarships targeted at underrepresented groups in the lower 48 or a new hockey rink?
