Grapevine – UAF news and information
Pay equity letters for staff
We were told that the letters of determination for our staff positions would be in the mail in the beginning of June. Mine still has not arrived and I am wondering if they have gone out or when will they. If we don’t receive one how can we get it.

Missing Grapevine
Why was original question regarding the Nanooks move to the Patty Center (answered by Keith Champagne approximately June 1, 2019) removed from the Grapevine? I saw it there just yesterday, after Keith Champagne was appointed as the Athletics Director. Thank You

Layoffs/furloughs and health insurance
If layoffs/furloughs happen in early July due to no budget, will employees still have health insurance during this time or is it suspended until we return?

Wet carpet in Eielson
Why is the carpet on the first floor of Eielson always wet? Should we be concerned about mold?

Athletics marketing stats
Dr. Champagne said that “In the modern 21st century university an intercollegiate athletic program is sine qua non. It is a major source of branding, marketing and publicity for a major public research flagship Tier I university. Intercollegiate athletics programs at a Land Grant university are the institution’s gift to the citizens of the state […]

Parking question
With the possibility of Admin Services moving to Lathrop and having premium parking, will there be a reduction of cost for gold lot permits? It doesn’t seem fair that the only people having to pay such a high price to park near their offices are those that work in the core.

Horizontal cuts
In earlier budget communications from the Chancellor (April 15), it was stated that a round of vertical reductions were being worked through and that horizontal reductions would be minimized wherever possible. In more recent communications, it has been stated multiple times that each unit has been told to plan for a 10% budget reduction. This […]

Salaried employees and flex time
I hear very different ideas of what it means to be salary in these hard times. And I see various interpretations from one supervisor to the next on what someone can and cannot do in similar positions. I would love an explanation of what it means to be salary aka non-exempt at UAF; and in […]

How can we ensure that students use their UAF email?
I’m in a department that often sends automated emails to students, emails containing information that is confidential by law. I have heard from colleagues at other UA campuses (so yes, this is anecdotal) that many students make it through a degree program without ever having checked their official UA email account, or even knowing that […]

Salary survey announcement?
When will there be an announcement on the salary survey? It sounds like faculty and some staff are being notified but when where there be a larger announcement?

Ice Cream Thursdays?
Any idea when/if Ice Cream Thursdays will be back this summer?

Parking
Morale would be significantly improved if there was a way to improve parking. Such as special days when parking is more open to those with regular decals, especially when the shuttle is at limited hours. Most days during the summer, (or winter break), at least 75% of the parking at upper campus (lower Bunnell, south […]

Loud noise from load banks
What are the large power storage load banks located at the Center for Power and Energy near the bike and walking path bridge over the railroad tracks near West Valley High School and the community garden and why are they now all of a sudden making a lot of noise? These structures have been there […]

Sick leave and the adoption process
In the sick leave policy, it states “Adoption of a minor if required by the adoption process” can qualify for sick leave. Does this mean anything that might take an employee away from work regarding an adoption, or does it mean medical appointments that have to do with the adoption?

Recreation classes taught by adjuncts
If we want to lower faculty to student ratios why not eliminate all recreation classes taught by adjuncts?

More student involvement
Why is there not more student involvement on committees? Looking over the faculty senate website and the committee make-ups,  the Graduate Affairs Committee is the only committee that has student representatives. Why not the Curricular Affairs Committee or the General Education Requirement Committee?

Rekey?
I heard a rumor that the university has begun the process of rekeying the entire university. Is this true? How much is that going to cost, in terms of labor and equipment? Why is this necessary to do now, in the current budget climate?

Meetings in the Pub are not inclusive
How does an advertisement in the Cornerstone asking for people to use the Pub for work events encourage a culture of inclusiveness? There are many recovering alcoholics on campus and encouraging departments to have work environments where alcohol is present is insensitive at best and potentially disruptive to people’s careers where they might have to […]

Yearly cost of OIPC
Maybe the question about the yearly cost of the office of intellectual property and commercialization was not clear. Forget the cost of materials, travel, etc. though I am sure that is a line item for the office? What is the total yearly salary and benefits commitment to the office based on the staff-faculty listed on […]

Confusing enrollment data
I’m very confused about the UAF enrollment data: https://www.uaf.edu/files/pair/Fall_2019_ESRs/ESR_Fall_Enrollment_and_SCH_for_2019-04-22.pdf The UAF enrollment numbers (2710) and decline (234) % decline (8%) do not match the totals under Fairbanks campus. Same applies to UAA. Is this a spreadsheet error or some hidden math?

What is the money gained from parking tickets used for?
Question 1: I’ve always wondered what Parking Services did with the money gained from parking tickets. Questions 2: I have asked this question many times with no clear answer. When the university is charging people $25 – $65 a citation I would like to know what that money is used for because it’s certainly not […]
