Grapevine – UAF news and information
Compliments on the Friday Focus columns in Cornerstone
I’m a staff member of UAF, and I read each of the Friday Focus columns with interest. They provide me with a window into the thinking of UAF leadership that is informative and very welcome. I appreciate that each of the writers so far has been willing to take the time—out of what must be […]

Pick, Click, Give
Is UA part of the Pick, Click, Give program for the PFD?  If so, I think we should market that before the PFD application period closes, so that those of us who really support UA can do so voluntarily regardless of the legislature’s final budget decision.  It would also provide an interesting data point to […]

Feel worse after forum
I am not sure if the forum on staff morale was intended to boost morale but I feel worse now. Most of the suggestions from the panel ranged from laughable to insulting. Questions were answered with vague platitudes. I understand there are so many unknown factors with regard to UAF’s future, but this did not […]

Something troubled me at the chancellor’s forum on morale
Something troubled me at the chancellor’s forum on morale: the mentions made by White, Prakash, and maybe others about how we love our jobs and are proud to work at UAF, with an implication that our love and pride are one of our greatest assets. Please, UAF leaders, don’t rely on our love and pride […]

Duplication of academic programs in Fairbanks, Anchorage, Juneau
There are dozens of academic programs that are duplicated either in Fairbanks, Anchorage or Juneau. Which of these duplicate programs been eliminated in the past decade? How can the legislature perceive that the university has been cut to the bone when there are so many duplicated academic programs in Fairbanks/Anchorage/Juneau?

Adding speed bumps
The west end portion of North Tanana Drive use to have speed bumps just north of O’Neill/WRRB before asphalt work was needed to repair the holes caused by melting ice lenses. New asphalt was installed but the speed bumps were not, although the signs still exist. Since that time North Tanana Drive is now fully […]

Sun Star boxes, racks
Can the Sun Star paper boxes and racks be removed from campus? While the move to a digital version of the paper is definitely the direction the industry is headed, the perpetually empty boxes and racks do not send an overall positive message about campus.

When will we know more?
I’m on a 9-month contract; I don’t work from May to August. I have a fear that, come July, I will have already burned through two months’ savings only to find out that I don’t have a job waiting for me in August. Can we expect to know more about the fall budget by the […]

Student involvement on campus
As a student on campus, I am very concerned by the lack of student involvement and student empowerment on campus. It’s really depressing when students don’t know what’s going on and even worse when they do know whats going on but don’t seem to care. Our athletics involvement is terrible, campus events usually have low […]

Restrooms in Signers’, Eielson
Multiple people in Signers’ and Eielson have reported through the proper channels that there is no soap in several of the bathrooms. Now someone told me that they were informed that the custodial staff did not have the soap to refill the dispensers and were also out of paper towels. At some point this becomes […]

Committee coordination
There seem to be numerous committees working on issues of diversity and inclusion (IDEA Task Force, Strategic Planning, Strategic Enrollment Planning, DEC Diversity Advisory Committee, etc.) and many departments have undertaken their own diversity and inclusion initiatives (Nanook Diversity and Action Council, BLaST, Residence Life, etc.) and it seems to be a waste of human […]

Loud fans; power plant stack
Will an enclosure be erected to mitigate the noise from the large fans south of the lower dorms? It’s hard to imagine that anyone in our neighborhood welcomes the airport-like sound levels. (What is the decibel level?) Also, I see smoke/steam coming now and then from our new power plant’s stack. When will the new […]

What do we tell students?
Hello. At an event recently I was asked by a student about fall registration coming up. The student asked if he registers for classes now are most them to going to be canceled by the Fall? Whats the point of registering when a bunch of classes are just going to be canceled? How do I […]

Are University of Alaska employees state employees?
Question 1: I have asked this question a few times without answer. Thank you. Question 2: Are UAF employees […]

Daylight saving time and clock updates
It is my understanding that in order for the clocks on campus to be changed with Daylight Savings Time, a work order for each individual clock across the entirety of campus needs to be submitted. Then each work order is addressed individually. This appears to be a colossal waste of man-hours, money and time (taking a human […]

Thin walls
Is there any way to reinforce the walls in Gruening? It gets really annoying when you’re trying to watch a documentary in one class, and you can hear everything that is being taught in the classroom next door.

Why charge for professional development classes?
In the recent email from Keli Hite-McGee, she indicated there were professional development trainings available. Why are these classes UA employees must pay for? Almost all of them ranged from $80-$100 for a session. Since there is no travel budgets for conferences, it would be useful to have professional development that was free for employees.

SRC classes
As a student who pays for the SRC membership, I am very frustrated about the classes. That is especially true for the indoor cycling classes. As […]

Has the Eielson parking lot changed from two-hour parking to all day?
Quite a few vehicles are routinely parked directly in front of Eielson for the entire day and do not receive tickets. If the parking lot has changed, the two-hour parking signs should be removed or those vehicles should receive tickets for taking up parking spaces for longer than the lot allows.

“Take care of yourself”
I listened to the chancellor’s enrollment forum today. Towards the end Provost Prakash recognized staff and faculty are working hard but we need to remember to take care of ourselves. How are we supposed to do that? We are so understaffed and over worked there is no time to “take care of yourself.” Now with […]

More on Murie showers

Ranch dressing
Arctic Java should order more ranch dressing – they are always out with only Bleu Cheese and Italian available. If you’re going to sell salads you should have ranch dressing.  Adjust your ordering or something it’s getting ridiculous.

Registrar’s role at UAF
At my last school the registrar played a pretty prominent role in the leadership, but here I never see or hear anything about the registrar. I was just wondering who the registrar is and what that role is responsible for at UAF.

Scholarships
Every year I wonder about two scholarships that I have personal knowledge of. One is the Jimmy Bedford Scholarship (it was established something like 25 or 30 years ago. The other is the William Waugaman Scholarship (established about 12 years ago). To my knowledge, neither one has ever been awarded to a student. It has […]

Advising for summer courses
A note in today’s Cornerstone (2/5) states that all students must now see an advisor before registering for summer courses. Given that most faculty are off contract starting in mid-May (and thus not available for advising), and given that many of our students do not register until a week or two before classes begin, how […]

Housing rates
Residence life recently came out with their new housing rates for Fall 2019 – Spring 2020. Why did they feel the need to increase these rates so quickly at such a large amount? From what I understand, RA’s and student staff were not even aware of these changes until the rates were posted.

The use of the term “academic freedom”
I have heard the term “academic freedom” used by faculty in a similar fashion to “because I said so”, in a more diverse society with more diverse opinions, I think it would come off better if faculty members use the term followed by an explanation as to why their specific actions, methods, or rules in […]

Signs near Reichardt Building
Are there any plans to replace the stop sign exiting Reichardt onto Yukon Drive? It got taken down during construction this summer, and now a lot of people just come flying out onto Yukon. Murie Building showers
The Murie showers are listed as being available for staff, faculty, and students. I can understand why the hours have been modified, though it does make it admittedly extremely inconvenient for staff members who work during the only times they are open. Staff members are also often required to work on weekends when the showers […]

Disintegrating containers
I would like to suggest that the Wood Center dining area find a different type of “To-Go” container. The food I got today was delicious, but the container had completely disintegrated in the 10-15 minutes it contained food (from wood center to office -then eaten still piping hot), leaving a pool of sticky spicy pork […]

Declining student enrollment at UAF
I heard a rumor that UAF has suffered a consistent decline in student credit hours and number of graduates. Is this true?  How bad is this decline in student enrollment (I heard ~25% decline over the past decade in terms of fall 2018 student credit hours compared to fall 2008 student credit hours).

Wood Center menus
In the Wood Center, some of the menu screens revolve, move between showing menu items/prices, and showing a Banner with the place’s name, or other info. Is there a way to stop this? SRC showers
In the women’s locker room that’s adjacent to the gym, the shower head closest to the right wall is bad. There is barely any water coming out of it. As a result, nobody wants to use. At peak hours, there is a line of women waiting for a shower, and there could be three that […]

Why doesn’t UAF have a higher education degree program?
I just started the MPA program at UAS, about 1/2 to 2/3 of my class are all UAF or Fairbanks-based students. Everyone is wanting to pursue the higher education concentration the MPA program offers. Why doesn’t SOM or SOE develop a higher education program instead of losing all these students to UAS?
