Grapevine – UAF news and information
What’s the story about the bowling alley?
I’ve been curious about what future plans for the bowling alley in the Wood Center entail. With the inclusion of KSUA and the Student paper upstairs, it would be a great space to further bring student organizations together under the same roof.

What’s the plan?
Now that consolidation/merging of campuses and program reviews have been suspended I can’t help but wonder what’s the plan? How will the future cuts be met? The across the board cuts that we have been enduring for years now has hollowed out the University to a point that feels like an implosion is all the […]

Maternity leave
Does UAF have any paid maternity leave? Cannot find a clear answer on the HR site.

MyUA performance evaluation process
I have a question about evaluations through MYUA. Who is reading them? What are their purpose? Where are they being stored? Why aren’t people being held accountable for doing them like safety trainings? If pay-steps ever come back into play will they reflect pay raises? I agree they are important, but they are an INCREDIBLE […]

Administrative leave?
Question 1: Do employees who are placed on administrative leave full receive their full salary? If so, are they allowed to take other employment while they are on administrative leave? Does the university make any attempt to track this? Question 2: What are the circumstances in which an employee can take an unpaid leave of […]

Save money, turn out the extra lights in Butrovich
Hello – I was on campus about 9pm last night and Butrovich looked like it had all of its lights on. Couldn’t some of those emergency lights (I’m assuming they are) be turned off? It would help with cost savings.

Money for e-sports
I’ve heard that UAF is allocated money (BIG money) to starting an E-Sport program on campus. Why isn’t that money going to an established program facing a cut?

Student retention coordinator position
Does UAF have a position that exclusively deals with overall Student Retention regardless of income or first generation status,  or do they just withdraw from classes and programs without much objection?   I ask because seems like having students meet with a person who specializes in class and program withdrawal prevention and who can provide holistic […]

Medical exam paperwork
The fiscal year started July 1 and on Sept. 17 employees were told via email of the new wellness program. So instead of taking all the required paperwork to medical exams in that 6-week period, the employee or spouse has to double back and get the paperwork to the physicians and hope they fill it […]

Thursday night football at the Pub
Does the UAF Pub only show NFL games on Monday? It is possible to show Thursday night games?

UAF dumpsters
What can be done about people using the UAF dumpsters for personal trash – we work in an area of campus that has a dumpster off the beaten path and several times we have witnessed people pulling in and dumping trash out of personal vehicles and this does not seem appropriate. What can be done?

Is it true UAF pays for the travel of opposing teams when there matches in Fairbanks?
I have heard from people not involved with athletics that UAF picks up the tab for the teams who travel up to Fairbanks to compete in official university matches. Is there any truth to this?

Which student workers are Title IX responsible employees?
Are student workers “responsible employees” with regard to reporting suspected Title IX violations or sexual misconduct? I was just looking at one of the contract letters we give our student workers, and it says, “You are a ‘responsible employee’ under Title IX.” So is it the case that all student workers are “responsible employees,” or […]

Shuttle tracker brief cost/benefit analysis
Since the removal of the shuttle tracker, it has come to my attention just how effective a tool it was in my work routine. I occasionally have need to go from lower campus to upper campus in the course of a workday. Without having the access of a tracker to be able to time catching […]

Bus to Ester
I’m very happy to see that there is shuttle bus to Ester, but what about EFG housing here on campus as well? I would love to at least have an evening route stop/go by there. There used to be one a few years ago, and it was super helpful!

Unhappy with Prevention Cloud
I’m wondering why the new PreventionCloud system requires significantly more paperwork and effort on behalf of our already overwhelmed employees. I was very frustrated to see that we now have to download and manage the collection and submission of “optometrist visit packets,” “dental visit packets” and “physician visit packets” if we want our annual visits […]

President Johnsen
[Sept. 16] was only the second time I have ever seen President Johnsen on lower campus. It heartened me to see him walking with and interacting with students, even shaking hands.

Hazardous conditions on West Ridge roads
Could signage be placed for no parking on the road going to the W9 parking lot (by IARC) saying no parking and along the skihut part of the road? Every year events like ski clubs, and running clubs from K-12 and other community events park there. In the 15 yrs+ I’ve worked here is just […]

Concerns about anti-LGBT public presentations on campus
Question 1: Many folks are wondering why we were subjected to high volume misogynistic and transphobic rants on our way to the Wood Center Thursday afternoon [Aug. 29]. According to UAF policy, “No activity will be scheduled/approved on campus, which in UAF’s judgment evidences a clear likelihood of disrupting campus operations, interfering with the rights […]

Lowercase job titles
I noticed communications are coming out with people’s titles in all lowercase. Is this following the trend that Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz (or “ceo” as he called himself) started with lowercasing all their job titles? Without someone knowing the Starbucks trend, it looks like a grammatical error. Is this an initiative that all staff will […]

Postcards at the bookstore, please!
If it is at all possible, I think it would be wonderful to have some UAF branded postcards available in the bookstore. I believe there are a couple up at the map store (which I LOVE visiting), but it would be nice to get a fun array of UAF/Nanook postcards in our bookstore, especially since […]

Alternatives to shuttle tracker service
The shuttle tracker system was shut down this semester, which I can understand in light of the recent budget cuts to the university. However, I don’t think the current system of vaguely setting the shuttle schedule as “continuous __ minute loops” is a good alternative. This tells me nothing about when to expect the shuttle […]

Tuition waiver and surcharges
Over the last five years, I’ve taken several classes using the tuition waiver for employees. This is the first semester I’ve taken a course in one of the units that has a tuition surcharge (in this case, CEM). When I paid my fees last week, I noticed that the waiver did not include the tuition […]

Mail center
I’m waiting on text books that say they were delivered early last week that I still have not received a package pick up slip for. Every semester I order my books on-line and they get delivered on time, then I have to wait days upon days sometimes 1-2 weeks for the post office to finally […]

Betsy DeVos visit
Does UAF believe hosting and promoting a visit to campus by Betsy DeVos is consistent with its stated commitment to “providing a safe and respectful campus environment free from gender-based violence and sexual harassment”? Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is rolling back regulations “that protected transgender students from discrimination and allowed them to use gender-segregated […]
