Grapevine – UAF news and information
Full business centers
In a recent budget update, Chancellor White mentions expanding shared services at the main campus.  He characterizes “full service business centers” as a one-stop-shop for travel, procurement, fiscal transactions, personnel, and payroll.  How does this impact the future of administrative staff within units?  Staff who are already providing these services but not within a shared […]

Executive Restructuring
UAF has 9 vice chancellors and 21 directors.  In addition to administrative staff reviews, are restructuring efforts underway for executive leadership positions?  Could any be consolidated?

Concerns with the metrics to be used by the Administrative Review Committees
I’m concerned with the metrics planning to be used by the Administrative Review Committees.  How are staff units being measured on the quality of their work?  Everyone has a different perception of quality.  A scale of evaluation has not been distributed prior.  Please explain this metric.  How can staff be reassured that these rushed reviews […]

Add report wrong information button in People Directory
I know that we’ve gone to self updating information in the edir now turned People directory. I keep running into complete wrong and outdated information. Some users are happy to update, and others not so much. It would be greatly appreciated to have correct and useful information out there instead of having to hunt someone […]

Compact different from governor’s budget
The 2019 UA agreement between the Board of Regents and the governor appears to be in conflict with the governor’s 2020 “flat budget.” What can be done to revoke the agreement given it is in conflict with the governor’s new fiscal approach?

Can the purchase of carbon offsets be included in travel requests?
Due to our remote location and need to collaborate, we travel by air a lot, especially certain researchers and high level administrators. Can the purchase of carbon offsets be included in travel requests? When using general funds to travel? When using federal or other funds? Perhaps this can even be mandated. See Alaska Airlines partner […]

Is the goal of UAF leadership to run off employees?
I have to wonder if the leadership’s budget strategy is to run off employees.  In today’s CS budget column, Chancellor White talks about shared services as a cost-saving measure.  Why is it necessary to make this announcement right before the holiday closures when staff will be left to wonder about the security of their positions.  […]

What is leadership doing to help improve staff morale?
Speaking to several staff members here at UAF, staff morale is at an all-time low due to the budget climate, impending layoffs, staff shortages, inaction on reported supervisor/administrator intimidation/bullying, and the list goes on. I would like to know what actions (not words) our UAF leadership (i.e., Provost and Chancellor) are doing to help improve […]

Question about Staff Council meeting notes
Meeting notes for the Staff Council meeting on November 12 included this excerpt “An expedited administrative review process is being led by UAF Faculty Senate. Governance will work out the process with the Chancellor to review administrative effectiveness and collect information to justify their existence.” As a staff member and administrator who exists and wishes […]

Different grading options
I was taken back when I heard a student describe to me that they had an two options in their marketing/business class : they could go the “A Option” or the “B Option”- both of these options denote what the highest grade you can receive in the class. Example: Option A would allow you to […]

Online course evaluations down?
The Blue system has been down for at least 24 hours, whether accessed via Blackboard or the links that keep being sent to students. Will the open period for online evaluations be expanded, given that the system is down?

IDEA task force report
Question 1: Back in July, the following question was asked: I’ve been waiting months for the recommendations from the IDEA Task Force. Shouldn’t that group have finished their work by now? And when will the final reports from the strategic planning committees be available? According to the strategic plan website, the groups should have finished […]

Speak about UAF academic programs in the same way
Today I read the article “FY 21 budget includes funding for UAA and UAF athletic programs” in the UA News Center. I was struck by how I have yet to hear UAF administration speak about any academic programs in such glowing, life-changing descriptions. The continued funding of athletics to the detriment of UAF academic programs […]

Staff changes announced by email, in Cornerstone
I just got the e-mail about Evon Peter leaving UAF. Why is the chancellor announcing his departure with praise but when Kari Burrell and Susan Henrichs left all they got was a short announcement in the Cornerstone? They put in as much effort as Mr. Peter did. Last week someone asked about the chancellor’s disparate […]

Is UAF being reimbursed for the salary increases some folks were informed of from UA HR?
This week, some employees received notices from UA HR that they are getting salary increases as a consequence of the UA Salary Survey. Will the units containing the affected employees receive a corresponding increase to their budget to support those increases? (And are the salary increases to base?)

Disparate treatment by chancellor
I have noticed that Chancellor White often refers to female vice chancellors by name and male vice chancellors by title during forums.  The first time I thought it could be accidental/coincidental, but it happened again today during the budget forum and seems to be a pattern.    I find this offensive and frankly, unacceptable given […]

How did Hess Commons get bookmobile service?
I just saw a flier saying that the public library’s bookmobile was now visiting Hess Commons on a trial basis. Probably the borough is ultimately responsible for this decision, but maybe you can tell us why the University even asked for it. Hess Commons is literally 1500 feet from the nearest bus stop, where people […]

Asbestos in ceiling tiles
Do any of the buildings on the UAF campus that have drop down ceiling tile contain asbestos? Especially the older buildings like Irving I/II and O’Neill? The drop down ceiling tiles in the older buildings are often heavily damaged and some are crumbling due to water damage.

Unused dining money students are forced to pay for
What happens with the unused money that students have leftover on their meal plan at the end of the academic year? I realize it rolls over between fall to spring, but at the end of spring, students do not get leftover money back. Does Dining Services simply keep that money? Or do they at least […]

Who decides Title IX cases?
Are final decisions in Title IX cases at UAF determined by a single person? After a recent conversation, I was left with the impression that the investigation is done by one or more people but then the final determination is done by just one individual.
