Grapevine – UAF news and information
Is the goal of UAF leadership to run off employees?
I have to wonder if the leadership’s budget strategy is to run off employees.  In today’s CS budget column, Chancellor White talks about shared services as a cost-saving measure.  Why is it necessary to make this announcement right before the holiday closures when staff will be left to wonder about the security of their positions.  […]

Qualifications for academic advising
Is there policy regarding academic advising qualifications?

Question about Staff Council meeting notes
Meeting notes for the Staff Council meeting on November 12 included this excerpt “An expedited administrative review process is being led by UAF Faculty Senate. Governance will work out the process with the Chancellor to review administrative effectiveness and collect information to justify their existence.” As a staff member and administrator who exists and wishes […]

Different grading options
I was taken back when I heard a student describe to me that they had an two options in their marketing/business class : they could go the “A Option” or the “B Option”- both of these options denote what the highest grade you can receive in the class. Example: Option A would allow you to […]

Online course evaluations down?
The Blue system has been down for at least 24 hours, whether accessed via Blackboard or the links that keep being sent to students. Will the open period for online evaluations be expanded, given that the system is down?

IDEA task force report
Question 1: Back in July, the following question was asked: I’ve been waiting months for the recommendations from the IDEA Task Force. Shouldn’t that group have finished their work by now? And when will the final reports from the strategic planning committees be available? According to the strategic plan website, the groups should have finished […]

Speak about UAF academic programs in the same way
Today I read the article “FY 21 budget includes funding for UAA and UAF athletic programs” in the UA News Center. I was struck by how I have yet to hear UAF administration speak about any academic programs in such glowing, life-changing descriptions. The continued funding of athletics to the detriment of UAF academic programs […]

Staff changes announced by email, in Cornerstone
I just got the e-mail about Evon Peter leaving UAF. Why is the chancellor announcing his departure with praise but when Kari Burrell and Susan Henrichs left all they got was a short announcement in the Cornerstone? They put in as much effort as Mr. Peter did. Last week someone asked about the chancellor’s disparate […]

Is UAF being reimbursed for the salary increases some folks were informed of from UA HR?
This week, some employees received notices from UA HR that they are getting salary increases as a consequence of the UA Salary Survey. Will the units containing the affected employees receive a corresponding increase to their budget to support those increases? (And are the salary increases to base?)

Disparate treatment by chancellor
I have noticed that Chancellor White often refers to female vice chancellors by name and male vice chancellors by title during forums.  The first time I thought it could be accidental/coincidental, but it happened again today during the budget forum and seems to be a pattern.    I find this offensive and frankly, unacceptable given […]

How did Hess Commons get bookmobile service?
I just saw a flier saying that the public library’s bookmobile was now visiting Hess Commons on a trial basis. Probably the borough is ultimately responsible for this decision, but maybe you can tell us why the University even asked for it. Hess Commons is literally 1500 feet from the nearest bus stop, where people […]

Asbestos in ceiling tiles
Do any of the buildings on the UAF campus that have drop down ceiling tile contain asbestos? Especially the older buildings like Irving I/II and O’Neill? The drop down ceiling tiles in the older buildings are often heavily damaged and some are crumbling due to water damage.

Unused dining money students are forced to pay for
What happens with the unused money that students have leftover on their meal plan at the end of the academic year? I realize it rolls over between fall to spring, but at the end of spring, students do not get leftover money back. Does Dining Services simply keep that money? Or do they at least […]

Who decides Title IX cases?
Are final decisions in Title IX cases at UAF determined by a single person? After a recent conversation, I was left with the impression that the investigation is done by one or more people but then the final determination is done by just one individual.

Thanks to the Facilities Services operations group for making the roads so drivable by Friday morning. While the rest of town was a mess it was nice to come onto campus and drive on cleared streets.

Delaware Cost Study raw data
The Delaware cost study table that is available under “Other resources” on the expedited review page of the Provost does not provide details, such as, number of full time department faculty, adjuncts, joint-faculty, faculty salary, number of students, etc. Can the raw data be posted so departments can evaluate if they include ghost faculty or […]

15% general fund reduction to all units does not support quality academic programming
How does asking for academic units to take a blanket 15% reduction to their general fund allocation in FY21 show that UAF is supporting maintaining a quality academic experience? At what point will decisions be made that some departments need to be cut, while others are supported, instead of destroying all departments equally by attrition […]

Kudos to our Lathrop Building custodian
Just wanted to give a shout-out to our wonderful custodian Henrietta. We are all so happy that she has made the trip with us from the Admin Services Building to Lathrop! Henrietta is probably the hardest-working custodian that I have ever seen and is a joy to talk to as she works around the building. […]

Indigenous Peoples Day and academic program review
October 14th is Indigenous Peoples Day. On October 15th UAF announced it was reviewing Alaska Native Studies and Alaska Native studies for possible program elimination. Is that the message we want to send to celebrate and acknowledge the first peoples of Alaska?

Delaware cost study?
The list of programs for expedited program review were apparently based on the results of the most recent Delaware Cost Study. Does the university plan on making the report on which decisions were based (i.e., the results of that cost study) available to the public?
